A chemical warehouse outside Seville, Spain, erupted in flames on Tuesday, prompting urgent shelter-in-place orders and drawing a swift emergency response.

The explosion happened just after 1 p.m. in Alcalá de Guadaíra, a town about 16 kilometers southeast of Seville. The fire started at Plainsur, a facility known for storing flammable industrial chemicals. Thick black smoke quickly rose from the scene, visible from across the region.

Officials immediately sent alerts to people living within a three-kilometer area, asking them to stay indoors, close windows, and avoid exposure to the smoke. Reports later noted that as many as 80,000 people may have taken safety measures.

Firefighters from nearby towns, including Utrera and La Rinconada, joined the response. In addition, the regional government activated a Level 1 emergency plan to manage resources and coordinate support.

Here’s what’s confirmed so far:

  • The explosion occurred at a chemical storage site in the La Red industrial park.
  • Stored materials included ethylene and toluene, both highly flammable.
  • One worker was treated for burns, and a firefighter was hospitalized for smoke-related illness.
  • Tens of thousands received public health alerts and were told to remain indoors.
  • Emergency services contained the fire by Tuesday night.

A witness who lives nearby told reporters, “We didn’t know what happened at first. We saw black smoke and heard sirens. It was frightening.”

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Investigators are considering both equipment failure and chemical reaction as possible explanations.

Though the fire is under control, air quality remains a concern. Officials have advised people with asthma, lung conditions, or other health issues to take extra precautions.
