Sly Stone, Groundbreaking Funk Musician, Dies at 82

Sly Stone, who led the influential band Sly and the Family Stone, died at age 82. He passed away on June 9, 2025, in Los Angeles. His family shared that he was surrounded by loved ones and had battled COPD and other health problems for years.

Stone was born in 1943 as Sylvester Stewart in Denton, Texas, and moved to California as a child. In the 1960s, he created a band that mixed different genres and backgrounds. The group featured men and women, Black and white musicians, and a blend of funk, soul, and rock. Their songs, including “Dance to the Music,” “Everyday People,” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” became hits.

Just before his death, he completed a screenplay about his life.

“After a prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues, Sly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his three children, his closest friend, and his extended family… While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come,” his family said.

His legacy lives on through the sounds and stories he helped shape.
