San Francisco Protests Over ICE Raids End in Dozens of Arrests

San Francisco took center stage in early June as protests over ICE raids and the National Guard’s arrival in Los Angeles reached the Bay Area. A peaceful demonstration on June 8 turned chaotic, leading to dozens of arrests and damage to public property.
Around 500 people gathered near the ICE field office on Sansome Street. Protesters chanted, waved signs, and showed support for those demonstrating in Los Angeles. They called for an end to immigration raids and spoke out against the federal troop deployment.
As the evening progressed, a smaller group began smashing windows, spray-painting walls, and damaging a Muni vehicle. Police declared an unlawful assembly and moved in to disperse the crowd.
Officers arrested 148 adults and six minors. Most received citations and were released, but one person faced felony charges. Officers reported two injuries during the clash and recovered a firearm from the scene.
Mayor Daniel Lurie responded: “Everyone in this country has a right to make their voice heard peacefully … But we will never tolerate violent and destructive behavior.”
The protest followed President Trump’s decision to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles under federal authority. About 300 troops had already arrived by June 8. In response, Governor Gavin Newsom filed a lawsuit, calling the move “a serious breach of state sovereignty.”

Concerns About Police Overreach
Bay Area officials criticized both the federal deployment and the local unrest. Supervisor Jackie Fielder raised concerns about police overreach. Congressman Kevin Mullin said the federal action “aimed to inflame and divide.”
Protester Nancy Kato shared her view: “The whole thing about going after immigrants and people who are undocumented … is so wrong.”
More protests are likely in the coming days. City officials say they will protect peaceful demonstrations while preparing for possible disruptions.
