Harvard University can no longer accept students from abroad. The Department of Homeland Security made this decision, saying the school doesn’t meet the conditions for hosting international students.

On May 22, the government canceled Harvard’s ability to sponsor F-1 and J-1 visas. That leaves about 6,800 students from other countries with few options. They now must either transfer or prepare to return home.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said, “It is a privilege, not a right, for universities to enroll foreign students and benefit from their higher tuition payments to help pad their multibillion-dollar endowments.” She pointed to campus protests, antisemitic actions, and possible ties to the Chinese government.

Here’s what’s happened:

  • Harvard loses approval to host F-1 and J-1 visa students
  • Around 6,800 students affected
  • DHS cites antisemitism, foreign ties, and campus unrest
  • The university has 72 hours to submit protest documentation
  • Legal action underway to contest federal order

Harvard said the decision was political and illegal. The school is suing and working to help students affected by the move.

Officials gave Harvard 72 hours to send videos and records from campus protests involving international students. That data could affect whether the ban is reversed.

This action follows earlier clashes. The Trump administration recently paused $2.2 billion in funds for Harvard and threatened to end its tax-free status. That happened after Harvard refused to change its policies on diversity and student speech.
