Ananda Lewis, a well-known face on MTV during the 1990s and early 2000s, passed away at the age of 52 on June 11. She passed away at her Los Angeles home in hospice care, after a years-long battle with breast cancer.

She first gained recognition as host of Teen Summit on BET, then moved to MTV, where she became known for shows like Total Request Live and The Hot Zone. In 1999, The New York Times called her “the hip-hop generation’s reigning It Girl.”

After leaving MTV, Lewis hosted her own daytime show and later worked as a correspondent for The Insider. She was also a trained carpenter and focused on youth education efforts.

Key points:

  • Born March 21, 1973
  • Rose to fame on BET and MTV
  • Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020
  • Chose holistic treatment in 2024
  • Died June 11, 2025

In 2020, Lewis announced she had stage 3 breast cancer. “For a really long time, I have refused mammograms, and that was a mistake,” she said. She found a lump through self-examination. By 2024, the cancer had reached stage 4. She chose to avoid surgery and instead used holistic methods, later expressing regret about that decision.

“I wish I could go back,” she said in a video. “Prevention is the real cure.”

She leaves behind her son, Langston, and her former partner Harry Smith, brother of Will Smith. Her sister confirmed the news online, saying, “She’s free … Lord, rest her soul.” MTV honored her legacy, noting, “Through her on-air hosting and interviews, Ananda helped raise a generation of music fans.”
