Free Outdoor Movie Nights Return to Union Square with “Cinema on the Square”

San Francisco’s Union Square is welcoming movie lovers with a new summer tradition: Cinema on the Square. Starting August 16, this free outdoor movie series will bring family-friendly films to the heart of the city — part of a larger plan to revive downtown with accessible entertainment.
A New Tradition Begins
Organized by SF Rec & Parks and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the series will feature a lineup of classic and fan-favorite films. Each has a tie to the Bay Area. The season kicks off with Mrs. Doubtfire, the iconic Robin Williams comedy filmed in San Francisco. Upcoming showings include Big Hero 6 on September 20 and Hitchcock’s The Birds on October 4.
Before each movie, visitors can enjoy trivia games, local performances, and fun community contests at Union Square Plaza.
What to Expect
Expect more than just movies. Guests arriving early will be treated to a Mrs. Doubtfire look-alike contest, live entertainment, and vendor treats. While seating is limited, attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets or low chairs. Fog is common after sunset, so warm layers are a smart idea.
The venue is ADA accessible, dog-friendly, and easy to reach via Muni and BART — no parking stress required.
A Boost for Downtown
Cinema on the Square is part of a citywide push to bring energy back to Union Square. Earlier this year, the Sundown Cinema series was canceled. In its place, city leaders launched more than 200 days of free events downtown — including tai chi, food pop-ups, and public art.
With its mix of nostalgia and community fun, this new series invites families, tourists, and longtime locals to rediscover the city center.
