What Is Off the Grid?

Off the Grid is a weekly food truck event that started in 2010. It brings together local food trucks in one spot, so people can enjoy meals from around the world without leaving the city. From tacos and dumplings to plant-based bowls and ice cream, there’s something for everyone.

But it’s more than just a place to eat. It’s where people meet up, unwind after work, or start their weekend with a casual night out.

When and Where

  • Starts: Friday, April 19
  • Ends: Friday, November 8
  • Time: 5 PM to 10 PM
  • Place: Fort Mason Center (Upper Parking Lot)
  • Entry: Free (just pay for what you eat and drink)

What’s New This Year

Opening night will feature more than 25 food trucks. Some are returning favorites, and others are brand new. One of the newcomers is Mozzeria, a Deaf-owned pizza truck making wood-fired Neapolitan pies. Señor Sisig, known for their Filipino fusion dishes, is also back and usually draws a crowd.

The event will also have:

  • A bar for drinks
  • DJs spinning live music
  • Plenty of picnic seating
  • Vegan, gluten-free, and family-friendly food options

Why People Keep Coming Back

Many San Franciscans say Off the Grid is more about the feeling than just the food.

“It’s where I go to shake off the week,” said Leah Tran, who lives nearby. “Even if I don’t know what I want to eat, I know I’ll find something. And it’s always nice to bump into familiar faces.”

For vendors, it’s also personal. “I like watching people try our tacos and smile,” said Marco Rodriguez from La Tapatía. “We get to talk to people, not just serve them. That means a lot.”

A Greener Approach

This year, Off the Grid is trying to cut down on waste. Guests are encouraged to bring their own containers. Composting and recycling stations will be easier to find. Some vendors are also testing solar-powered equipment to help reduce the event’s impact on the environment.

Why It Matters

Off the Grid is more than a fun Friday plan. It’s helped small food businesses grow, test new menus, and connect with the community. For locals and visitors, it’s a low-key way to enjoy great food, music, and the Bay breeze without needing a reservation or a big budget.

If you’re in the city, this is one of the easiest ways to spend a Friday night—just show up hungry.
