Valeria Márquez, a 23-year-old Mexican beauty content creator and salon owner, died after a gunman shot her during a TikTok livestream from her salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. The attack happened inside Blossom The Beauty Lounge, a business she built and promoted through a growing social media presence with over 100,000 followers.

Viewers saw Márquez respond to someone entering the salon. A man, reportedly posing as a delivery worker, asked for her by name. Then, he pulled out a firearm and shot her multiple times. Authorities later confirmed that she had been struck in the head and torso. Although emergency responders arrived quickly, they declared her dead at the scene. The gunman fled on a motorcycle and has not yet been identified.

Leading up to the incident, Márquez had raised concerns about her safety. According to El País, she received threats from a former partner and told people close to her that she feared for her life.

“She was scared, but she kept going. She just wanted to keep working,” said one client who knew her and spoke anonymously.

Local police treat the case as a potential femicide, a legal term in Mexico used for gender-based killings. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the shopping plaza and analyzing the livestream itself. However, no arrests have been made so far.

Violence Against Women, an Ongoing Problem

This attack has reignited national discussions around violence against women in Mexico. In 2023, officials recorded more than 900 cases of femicide. Yet, many advocacy groups argue that this figure falls short of the true extent due to persistent underreporting and investigative gaps.

Since Márquez’s death, her salon has remained closed. Meanwhile, mourners have built a small memorial outside the storefront with flowers, candles, and handwritten notes.

Authorities continue to ask the public for help in identifying the suspect.
