‘HBO Max’ Name Returns After Viewer Pushback
Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed it will restore the HBO Max name this summer 2025, undoing the Max rebrand it introduced in 2023. They announced the decision during the company’s upfront presentation in New York, and it reflects a larger shift in how the media giant wants its streaming platform to be seen.
When Warner Bros. Discovery rebranded the service to Max two years ago, the goal was to combine content from HBO, Warner Bros., and Discovery under a single banner. However, over time, it became clear the new name didn’t land with viewers the way the company hoped.
CEO David Zaslav said the HBO label remains closely linked to quality storytelling and prestige programming, something the simplified Max name failed to communicate. “We believe in what the HBO name stands for,” he told advertisers and the press. “It’s time to bring it back.”
JB Perrette, who leads streaming operations, also noted that the original rebrand led to brand confusion and didn’t highlight what made the service different. He said the platform will now refocus on the type of content that helped HBO build trust with audiences.
Here are the key takeaways:
- The name change will take place in summer 2025
- Warner Bros. Discovery says Max branding lacked audience connection
- The company plans to focus more on programming that reflects HBO’s roots
- As of Q1 2025, the service has 122.3 million subscribers globally
- Subscriber growth is projected to reach 150 million by the end of 2026
The decision follows a profitable 2024 for the streaming division, giving Warner Bros. Discovery more room to invest in programming tied to trusted franchises
