Trump Reinstates Travel Ban for 12 Countries, Sets Limits for 7

· · ·

President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation reinstating a travel ban on 12 countries and applying new restrictions to seven others. The measure will take effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on June 9.

The White House said the policy aims to address weak security systems in countries that do not share sufficient information with U.S. agencies. Trump highlighted concerns about visa overstays and foreign nationals who may pose security risks. The recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, linked to an Egyptian national, was also cited, although Egypt is not among the affected countries.

In his proclamation, Trump stated, “The restrictions and limitations imposed by this proclamation are, in my judgment, necessary to prevent the entry or admission of foreign nationals about whom the United States Government lacks sufficient information to assess the risks they pose to the United States.”

The full travel ban applies to:

  • Afghanistan
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • Chad
  • Republic of the Congo
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Yemen

Seven other countries face partial restrictions:

  • Burundi
  • Cuba
  • Laos
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo
  • Turkmenistan
  • Venezuela

Exceptions are in place for several groups, including U.S. lawful permanent residents, individuals with valid visas issued before June 9, diplomats, dual nationals using passports from non-restricted countries, and athletes participating in international events. Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens and holders of special immigrant visas are also excluded.

Civil rights organizations have condemned the move, arguing that it discriminates against people from lower-income and politically unstable nations. Legal challenges are likely, echoing the intense backlash and lawsuits that followed similar travel bans during Trump’s first term in office.
