John Brenkus, ‘Sport Science’ Host, Dies at 54

John Brenkus, the longtime host of the show “Sport Science,” has died at the age of 54. His family said he passed away on May 31, after facing a long battle with depression.
He became widely known for showing how science and sports connect. “Sport Science” used experiments, simulations, and expert analysis to explain athletic performance. It began on Fox Sports Net and later became a hit on ESPN. The show won six Sports Emmys during its run.
Brenkus helped launch BASE Productions and started Brinx TV, a streaming platform. In 2010, he wrote a book titled The Perfection Point that explored physical limits in sports.
During interviews, he spoke honestly about mental health. In 2023, he shared, “I literally picked up my phone, called my mom and said: ‘There’s something wrong with me. I am mentally lost.’” He said his dog helped him through dark times and that he turned to professionals for support.
