Skyline High School Shooting: One Student Injured, Two Arrested
Oakland, CA: A shooting at Skyline High School on Wednesday afternoon left one student wounded and led to the arrest of two juveniles. The incident added to growing concerns about campus safety in Oakland.

The Incident
Just before 1:30 p.m. on November 12, 2025, a male student shot another student on campus, triggering an immediate lockdown. Police officers reached the scene within two minutes, secured the area, and gave first aid to the victim.
Paramedics transported the student, who suffered a gunshot wound to the back, to a nearby hospital. He remains in stable condition. Officers arrested two juveniles shortly after the shooting and recovered two handguns. Investigators have not confirmed whether the suspects attend Skyline High School.
Response from Officials
Parents gathered outside the campus as police handled the investigation and school staff worked to account for all students. After several tense hours, authorities allowed students to leave in small, supervised groups once they declared the campus safe.
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee described the shooting as “a painful reminder of the gun violence affecting our communities.” She praised police for their quick response and urged local leaders to strengthen safety and prevention measures.
District and Community Support
The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) reopened Skyline High on Thursday, November 13, with extra security guards and on-site counselors. “Our students feel shaken,” said district spokesperson John Sasaki. “We are focusing on recovery, reassurance, and learning.”
Youth Alive Oakland, a local violence-prevention group, also visited the school to provide emotional support. The organization stated that the shooting deeply affected both students and staff.
History of Violence at Skyline
The event marks the third shooting connected to Skyline High in just over two years. In May 2024, gunfire after a graduation ceremony injured three people. In September 2023, a separate incident near the campus forced school officials to initiate a lockdown.
District leaders plan to review Skyline’s Comprehensive School Site Safety Plan to identify new ways to improve campus security and student safety.
Ongoing Investigation
Detectives continue to look into the motive behind the shooting. The Oakland Police Department’s Youth and School Safety Division urges anyone with information to contact their office.
As Skyline resumes classes, students, families, and educators continue to search for a sense of normalcy—and to demand stronger protections to keep schools safe.
