Downtown SF turns into a giant outdoor screen with large-scale projections across familiar buildings. Artists from around the world design digital artworks that ripple across architecture — think city storytelling with color and motion.

Pier 39 Holiday Tree

Fisherman’s Wharf gets a festive makeover with a towering Christmas tree at Pier 39. In addition to the tree, enjoy the sea lions, holiday shopping, and waterfront views. There are also light shows every half hour in the evenings.

Grace Cathedral

Inside the Gothic arches of Grace Cathedral, the holiday season feels contemplative and warm. The World Tree of Hope — decorated with thousands of origami cranes — is worth seeing on its own.

Yerba Buena Gardens Tree Lighting

Every December, a coastal redwood in Yerba Buena Gardens gets covered in lights for a short, fun evening full of community performances and free cocoa. Easy to access from Market Street, and family-friendly without being over-the-top.

Union Square Holiday Events

Union Square keeps things classic: skating, lights, and the huge holiday tree sponsored by Macy’s. The Winter Walk and pop-up markets round it out with food trucks and local art vendors between shopping runs.

SFMOMA: Holiday Makers Market & KAWS

SFMOMA keeps things creative with a holiday market of independent artists and designers. Meanwhile, its rooftop hosts KAWS HOLIDAY: SAN FRANCISCO, a giant inflatable artwork that’s part sculpture, part cultural moment.

Chinatown Lights & Lunar New Year

Murals, lights, and community art shows fill the Mission during December. Some artists add seasonal touches to existing street murals, and local galleries often host small-scale winter pop-ups.

The Fairmont San Francisco creates a giant, edible gingerbread house each year. The hotel’s pastry team uses real gingerbread bricks and pounds of candy to create the display. You can also book holiday tea or dinner inside the gingerbread house.
