A new report from June places San Francisco at the top of the list for hiking in the United States. The city also earned third place on the global scale, following Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City.

Using data from AllTrails, the report notes San Francisco’s 119 accessible and highly rated trails. These paths offer a range of views and environments—from coastal cliffs to forested hills—all within the city limits. This variety helps hikers of all skill levels find suitable routes without leaving town.

Here are some trails that stand out:

  • Lands End Trail: A 3.5-mile loop featuring ocean views, remnants of shipwrecks, and a hidden beach.
  • Dipsea Trail: Known for the historic Dipsea Race and its scenic Marin vistas.
  • Mount Sutro Loop: Forested terrain within city boundaries.
  • San Francisco Crosstown Trail: A 17-mile path weaving through urban and natural spaces.
  • Batteries to Bluff Trail: A short walk with direct views of the Pacific.
  • California Coastal Trail: Segments offer both beach access and high ridgelines.

The city’s weather makes hiking an option year-round. With trailheads close to neighborhoods and public transportation, hikers can easily mix outdoor time with urban convenience. This blend of access and nature helped the city surpass other U.S. locations in the rankings.
