Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who has portrayed the infamous Negan for nearly a decade, opens up about the return of his beloved weapon, Lucille, in the upcoming season of The Walking Dead: Dead City. The return of the iconic bat, wrapped in barbed wire, brings back memories for Morgan, who calls the prop one of the most important in his career. Fans will see a new chapter for Negan as he deals with the emotional weight of Lucille’s return in the show’s second season.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Reflects on 10 Years as Negan

Morgan’s role as Negan started in The Walking Dead Season 6 finale, and it’s hard to believe he’s now celebrating a decade as the character. “It’s crazy,” Morgan says. “I never thought I would be here 10 years later, and yet, here I am, still playing this character.” The actor has seen his character evolve over the years, and Dead City promises more of the complex dynamics Negan shares with others—especially Maggie, his longtime adversary.

Despite initial doubts, Morgan’s connection with The Walking Dead franchise only deepened. He never expected his role to last this long, but the creative team’s continued innovation kept bringing him back. As he moves into the spin-off series, Morgan reflects on how much the character has changed. “Negan is a guy who has done terrible things, but he’s always been looking for redemption. And in Dead City, he’s still trying to find it,” Morgan says.

When it comes to his connection with Lucille, Morgan’s feelings are clear. “It was like welcoming back an old friend,” he shares. “Negan has such a complicated relationship with Lucille. On one hand, she represents his darker past, but on the other, she was his weapon of survival.”

In Dead City, Negan’s journey continues with the return of Lucille in a way that will stir both excitement and unease. Morgan admits, “Holding Lucille again was like nothing else. It was a bit emotional. But it’s also a reminder of everything Negan has gone through.” The actor jokes about how much he cherished having the bat back in his hands during filming. “I wouldn’t let anyone else take her,” he laughs. “Lucille was always by my side.”
