SpaceX Starship Explodes During Ground Test, Delays Flight Plan
SpaceX faced another setback on June 18 when its Starship prototype was lost in an explosion during a static fire test in Texas. The blast destroyed Ship 36, which engineers were preparing for its next mission.
The incident happened just after 11 p.m. at the company’s Starbase site. The crew had started a routine test, which includes loading fuel and firing engines while the rocket remains in place. Suddenly, the rocket burst into flames before full engine ignition. The explosion created a fireball that could be seen for miles.
SpaceX quickly confirmed that the area was secure and that no one was injured. Investigators are now working to understand what caused the failure.
- Date and time: June 18, 2025, at 11 p.m.
- Location: Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas
- Event: Explosion during engine test (before ignition)
- Outcome: No injuries, rocket lost, upcoming flight delayed
“This was a major anomaly during a planned engine test,” a company representative said. “We are investigating and working with local authorities. The site is secure and there is no risk to the public.”
This marks the fourth failure in 2025 for the Starship program. Flights 7, 8, and 9 all ended in failure, and now Ship 36 has also been lost.
Despite these issues, SpaceX continues to aim for Moon and Mars missions. Still, each failure adds new challenges to the timeline.
